Even house dust mites like living in comfort

12. December 2011

When it starts to get colder again and it is cosy and warm at home, allergic reactions to house dust mites increase. It is estimated that between four and six million Germans now suffer from a house dust mite allergy.
The dry air from heating installations whirls up the main allergen – mite faeces – in the air. When the protein content of the faecal pellets comes into contact with the mucous membranes, inflammatory mediators, so-called histamines, are released. Histamines are messengers in the body which trigger the typical complaints.

An allergy to house dust mites often manifests itself in constant colds, sneezing, itching eyes and ears, sore throat, itching or swollen mucous membranes in the nose and throat. House dust mite allergies are now the second most frequent trigger of allergic respiratory diseases, accounting for around 25 per cent of such allergies.
